12.31.13 DAY 0, How did we get here?

On March 8, 2013 I had been Crossfitting for a little over 4 years.  I was doing the Open 13.1 workout at a local gym and I had a few seconds left on the clock at my final snatch attempt, which was 5lbs over my current PR and my body was fatigued.  After several fails I was determined to get that one last rep.  Before I picked up the bar I said to myself, I WILL NOT LET GO...

and I didn't... I went from this:
 to this:

 and finally to this:

I knew in the back of my mind that I shouldn't have been lifting that weight, but more than that I KNEW when to let go of the bar and didn't.

At the end of it all, I dislocated my shoulder, had a bankarts fracture, hill-sachs lesion, and two tears in my labrum.  Following that I developed a frozen shoulder that took about 6 months to heal.  The frozen shoulder was definitely by far the most painful part of my injury.

So after 10 months I am finally having surgery.

I have learned alot about myself and about CrossFit in the last year.  It has been difficult at times to say the least.  Especially because I opened my own gym just a few months ago.  It is hard to love something that has caused so much long term pain and changed the course of my life.  But through it all, I still deeply love CrossFit and believe that it does change lives.  My injury has helped me immensely as a Coach and as an Athlete to really keep things in perspective.

So as I mentally prepare for my surgery I thought it would be best to physically prepare too.  My diet has really gone to hell in the last 3 months, I have lost a bit of control.  I have gained a total of 10 pounds since my injury and I'm ready to take control of my diet again while I recovery.

I have always thought that clean eating has great physical benefits, so I am going to take the Whole 30 challenge as a way to help my body recover after my surgery.  I am starting this blog to keep me on track and focus my efforts.

So here goes nothing,  I am on Day 0, I have a full morning of paperwork at the gym then I am off to do some shopping :)
